This three-year undergraduate course, inclusive of the summer period, provides you with an introductory knowledge to the theory and scientific foundation of dental technology. It will prepare you with the necessary skills in laboratory practice within the professional environment of the teaching laboratory in a structured manner, ranging from basic dental technology skills and patient observation in clinical settings, to studies in removable prostheses and the theory and technical practice of fixed prosthodontics, to name a few. The course will provide sufficient knowledge to enable you as future dental technologists to undertake work prescriptions from the dental clinic and carry out the necessary work with responsibility.

The course will span three academic years inclusive of two semesters per year and a summer period. This will allow you to be exposed to the theory and scientific foundation of the profession and also become skilled in laboratory practice within the professional environment of the teaching laboratory in a structured manner as follows:

Course Overview

1st Year

You will receive knowledge on basic dental technology skills with reference to the construction of partial and complete upper and lower acrylic dentures. This will include the theoretical aspects of occlusion and material science. The health and safety aspects regarding laboratory procedures are also included as an important part of the studies. In parallel, you will also learn to perform dental laboratory technology skills and observe patients whilst working in a dental clinical setting.

2nd Year

You will further your studies in partial dentures including the construction of cast partial frameworks. The subject of orthodontics is tackled starting from the construction of basic appliances going on to the construction of functional appliances. Management skills are taught in preparation for the future running of a dental laboratory.

3rd Year

In the final year of the course, you will be exposed to the theory and technical practice of fixed prosthodontics. You will be able to observe the insertion of your own laboratory work in the teaching clinic. During your laboratory skills training, you will be exposed to various cases, in the subject being managed at the moment.

You will also be guided towards carrying out a research project to be presented by the end of the course.

The course will provide sufficient knowledge to enable you in becoming a professional dental technologist, and will therefore assume the repsonsibility to undertake work prescriptions from the dental clinic and carry out the necessary work with responsibility.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

An Advanced Level pass in Biology or Chemistry or an Intermediate Level pass at Grade C or better in Biology or Chemistry.

Applicants in possession of a pass with Merit or better in the Diploma in Dental Surgery Assistance shall be considered as having satisfied both the general and special entry requirements.

The maximum number of applicants that can be admitted into the course is 6 students.

The Admissions Board, acting on the advice of the Board, may admit applicants in possession of a Diploma in Health Science in the area of Dental Technology awarded by the University of Malta into the second year of the Course in the same area of study, in terms of regulation 8.1 of the Admission Regulations of the University.

Prior to enrolling for the Course, accepted applicants are also required to undergo an occupational health assessment as detailed in the Occupational Health Protocol approved by the Faculty Board, so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement shall be barred from attending the clinical placements indicated in the programme of studies.

Requirement for successful completion of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Dental Technology: 180 ECTS credits.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) - B.Sc. (Hons) - under the auspices of the Faculty of Dental Surgery.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

Construct fixed or removable prostheses and removable orthodontic appliances.
Manage the running of a dental laboratory and in a dental team.
Maintain health and safety in the laboratory environment.
Relate and interact effectively with individuals and groups as part of the dental team
Use a range of technological equipment and systems
Apply a range of skills and techniques to develop a variety of ideas in the creation of new/modified dental products and services.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:
